This here is some of the natural checking that occurs in the timber and then because it is outdoors it is going to expand and retract a little bit. The checking will begin to widen just a little bit and open up and you will be able to see the natural wood that is behind it that is not stained and especially in this darker stained timber you are going to notice it a lot more. It is completely normal and you will probably see even a little bit in some of the upper beams but by the next time you go to restain the posts and beams then you won’t notice them anymore. Again it is completely normal.

This post here we have notched out for a light switch and you can see the one inch hole back there and it also goes up through to the top as well. We have notched out the bottom so that we can take the wire and fish tape it up through to the top so we can have the wiring up to here for the light switch and then go up through the top and you can run your wires along the rafters and 2×6’s up where no one else will see for your rope lights, your TV, floodlights, whatever you want to wire, landscape lighting and things like that.

As the roof is getting set and the final 2×6’s getting screwed it down to the rafters one thing to notice or to take note, sometimes every once in a while our rafters or timbers vary in thickness and so the rafter layout might be just a little bit 1/6th to 18th big and on the flip side the rafter may be just a hair small. You may have to just chisel out a 1/6th of an inch for that to drop in.
Also not only the width but the height sometimes may vary. We got this rafter here you can see the top of the 2×6 is tight and this next one is down just a little bit and then the next one here is tight again. So you can see the two outside rafters are just a little bit taller than the center one. The center one may very well be just a little bit smaller to make up that extra 18th inch. The 2×6’s will flow right over it but we still put the two screws into that rafter so it will hold it in place. We do pick out the best wood, number one grade timber however due to it being raw timber it still does have its natural defects in it so just some things to be aware of.
